Napoleon in Russia Quote

One of my favorite ways to engage students with content is to relay short anecdotes that help them better visualize people and events from history.

Tomorrow is the 204th anniversary of Napoleon entering Moscow with his troops as the retreating Russians set the city on fire. Napoleon found it was impossible to stay through the winter and soon began a disastrous retreat from Russia.

Prior to this, however, Napoleon had met with several officers from a captured Russian company. Rather than humbling themselves to the French Emperor and general, the men boldly declared that, (notwithstanding their present predicament) Russians were superior to the French in every way.

"We Russians fight for honor," an officer contemptuously explained. "You French fight only for gain!"

"You are quite right," Napoleon calmly replied. "Each fights for that which he does not possess."

Constitution Day and Class Constitution Lesson Plan

This Constitution Day Back to School Class Constitution Group Project is an excellent back-to-school group activity for any social studies class or for Constitution Day each September 17 (or September 16th this year since it falls on a Saturday)!

Working in groups, students create a Class Constitution in the same format as our Constitution with a preamble, articles, and more! These are then presented and a final Class Constitution is created that can provide classroom rules for the whole year.

My classes worked on these the first week of school and I kept these posters hanging up in my room all year as a reminder that my students helped create the rules and it was a fantastic classroom management strategy!

A rubric for the activity is included for your convenience.

New Interactive Timeline Activity for Back to School

This is an awesome back to school or first day of school activity for a US History class! It features 33 events from American History on cards to cut out and give to students. They then line up in chronological order OR use one of 5 other lesson activities!

Students work together to decide the correct order of their events. I love this resource as an activity that allows my students to talk and get to know each other while also helping me to understand their background knowledge of US History.

They can also line up in order of the impact the events had on history, from positive to negative, geographically, or a number of other ways to encourage critical thinking and promote discussion among students.

The Best Lesson Plans for Your Observation & Evaluation

I was working last with a new teacher who subscribed to my US History curriculum at StudentsofHistory.org. She was getting observed and wanted to know which lessons would best to show off when her principal was in the room to observe her for her evaluation.

While I think every one of my lessons here is top notch, I know that you want to really show off something exciting for your evaluation. So, she and I went through each unit and I directed her to some lesson plans that would really stand out. These included some cooperative learning projects, 3D PowerPoints, my Pop Up Founding Fathers Lesson, and few others.

Afterwards I realized that's a common thing many teachers would want. A lot of administrators will tell you to let them know when a good time for them to observe you is. Even if they don't, it's always a good idea to say, "Hey Mr. Johnson, I'm doing a really cool lesson on soldiers in the Civil War on Thursday if you want to stop in and observe." That way, you show them that you're planning ahead and looking for their feedback.
